Domains of Expertise
Had a cognitive lecture yesterday and this was one of the slides. It regards Legitimate domains of expertise. Here we were talking about speed reading.
1. Normal readers fixate on a portion of the text 4 times a second,
2. 5-10 letters seen every second
3. therefore, calculations in experimental manipulation gives arnd 400 words per minute that can be read.
4. Speed readers on the other hand claim to be able to read 200,000 !! words per min
5. Experimentation shows they can mostly do arnd 15000 to 30,000 wpm.
6. They exhibit remarkable dexterity in page turning.
7. They have no comprehension of the text read.
Moral as expounded by lecturer: at the moment, dont waste money on speed reading packages.

hmm, was quite interested in speed reading initially too.... cuz it would benefit ppl like me who do last minute reading alot of times...
however, after reading ur point 7. They have no comprehension of the text read.
i guess i would have second thoughts on this :)
I havnt read the experimental reports myself but this was what my lecturer told us.. And he used it as an example of an illegitimate domain of expertise. So you can always go find out more i guess.
its true. speed readers consume the words sometimes- or most times- without comprehending actual meaning. i go thru that everyday. haha.
